The Krakow Mounds are one of those mysterious fixtures in the world that nobody can quite put their finger on. Four of the man-made giants are thought to have been built around the 1st and 2nd Century with a fifth added in the 14th century, the Esterka Mound which according to legend was built in honour of Esterka, the King´s lover who threw herself from an upstairs window when she heard he had been unfaithful to her. Regardless of the legend the fifth mound was demolished and turned into a football stadium in the 1970´s.  There has been much speculation as to what the mounds represent, from burial grounds of King´s to memorials dedicated to members of the Royal Court who committed suicide, though none of the theories have ever been substantiated with evidence. Whatever their reason for the presence the Krakow Mounds form part of the city landscape that have to be seen to be believed.
