The Archdiocesan Museum is housed in the Bishops Palace which was the long-term home to cardinal Wojtyla before he was appointed John Paul II in 1978 and moved to the Vatican.
The museum plays host to a vast collection of religious art ranging from Gothic sculpture of the Black Madonna to paintings which were prominent in the 17th and 18th centuries, together with robes and vestments of bishops including the one formally worn by the Pope.
As you would expect the museum focuses on the city´s and the palace´s most famous son and visitors will find many artefacts relating to Pope John Paul II including a canoe and the bicycle upon which he picked his way around the city.
Other items of interest in the Archdiocesan Museum are gifts Pope John Paul received from admirers all over the world after his appointment to the chief Pontiff of the Catholic Church.
