Established in 1879, the Krakow National Museum opened its doors to the public with a modest collection of around a dozen paintings. The collection grew rapidly however and due to a series of generous donations today boasts an impressive exhibit of some 70,000 pieces of art representing both Polish and international artists. The museum is divided into nine themed sections including a Japanese Art and Technology room, 20th Century Polish art and the famous Cloth Hall which is again divided into smaller sections showcasing exhibits dedicated to great Polish artists, poets and playwrights that lived in Krakow. The National Museum is the largest of its kind in Krakow and features a remarkable collection of historic and contemporary paintings together with sculptures, graphic art and militia exhibits focusing on haunting wartime and post-war images.
