The Market Square in the heart of Krakow was built in 1257 after the Mongol hordes invaded Poland and razed the city. At the time it was the largest market square in Europe and still has a vibrant atmosphere.
Throughout its illustrious history the Market Square has been an emporium of the Black Sea trade, but its commercial uses are matched by the social events that have been staged here including public executions.
Though those days are long gone, the square still comes to life during festivals and other public gatherings. With the majestic architecture of the surrounding buildings, street performers and some of Krakow´s principal tourist attractions, the Market Square continues to be one of the most popular gathering places for visitors and locals alike.
