Krakow nightclubs span out in their dozens from the old market square (The Rynek), in the picturesque surrounds of the historical Old Town. Positively teeming with bars, pubs and clubs, you won’t be short of place to burn your breeches. They say that the path of excess leads to the tower of wisdom. Well in Crakow you’ll be reflecting with the best of them in no time, for the path is short and peppered with mischief making nightclubs, pumping out a mixed bag of all your favourite dance, indie and retro anthems into the early hours. And if you’re after a another dimension of Krakow nightlife, make the short journey to the old Jewish district of Kazimierz for an alternative batch of Krakow nightclubs, where you’ll find the trendy set propping up the outlandish bars and generally causing a stylish riot, in a bohemian oddysey in which tabletop dancing isn’t out of place towards the end of a night.

Krakow nightclubs have come on in leaps and bounds in recent years, catering for a wide range of musical tastes and clubbing sensibilities, from house, garage and techno, to old school dance, disco, and pop; hip-hop, R&B and reggae, not forgetting the heavy rock popular amongst young Poles. Dress up, dress down: whether its goth, punk, burlesque or alternative there’s a place in Crakow to suit. A few of the more illustrious Krakow nightclubs now attract eminent DJs from the international circuit. Every night is party night in Krakow – the high student population guarantees this most of the time. However, at the end of academic year they migrate en mass for the summer and leave Krakow nightlife to an international crowd of hedonistic globetrotters.

Krakow nightclubs usually charge a small entrance fee: it can be free in some of the smaller clubs, but it usually comes to between 5 and 10 PLN (£1.25-2.50) and less after midnight. But once you’re in, drink prices can rise significantly from the Krakow norm – yet remain reasonable by UK standards. You may be tempted to get tanked up before hitting Krakow nightclubs, but be warned, bouncers don’t take kindly to drunkards from overseas, especially at the doors of some of Krakow’s more fashionable hangouts. To avoid trouble follow some simple, universal, rules: as you approach your chosen venue, try not to give the impression that your two vodkas short of stupefaction. Show some respect, act in a civilized manner, smile (not too much); and dress up where possible, lose the sportsware, and avoid associating with any loud yobbish fellow countrymen in the near vicinity. Unfortunately, not even this will guarantee your entry: as we all know, bouncer etiquette is whimsical at best. But you needn’t worry, if worst comes to worst, there’s at least one other Krakow nightclub in the same alley, and a dozen others in the neighbourhood.

Krakow nightclubs form the perfect antidote to the laid back calm of daylight hours in this magical town. Once you’re done with swanning about on Crakow’s charming and cobbled surface, what better way to get the bottom of a city then to immerse yourself in the gritty underworld of barefaced clubbing. And nightlife in Krakow literally is an underworld affair: most Krakow nightclubs subsist in a subterranean maze of interconnected crypts and vaulted cellars opening out into surprisingly spacious lounges and dance halls. Shamble down a set of medieval steps, and find yourself in the shadowy depths of a pulsing Krakow nightclub.
