The Off Plus Camera Film Festival is the youngest of Krakow’s multitude of annual celebrations of cinema, but has rapidly established itself as one of the big boys. Helped in no small part by the hefty financial clout of its main sponsor, the Plus mobile phone network, Off Plus Camera offers the biggest prizes and attracts the biggest names in independent cinema.

The event’s full name – Off Plus Camera International Festival of Independent Cinema – provides the clue that its focus is very much on the world of independent filmmaking. Usually held in April, festival week features something like a hundred films shown in various cinemas and other venues throughout the city – including open air and rooftop locations.

The main strand of the festival is the competition for first- and second-time directors, who compete for a very substantial cash prize. Each year the organisers also throw in other strands highlighting aspects of world cinema. Past segments have included batches of films about geek culture and exemplars of Israeli independent cinema.

Like all the best festivals, the movies are the meat of the matter, but there are also exhibitions, seminars and open debates on matters celluloid. Volunteering is also a fun way to get involved.
