Krakow Nights
Although the name “Krakow Nights” might seem like a series of pub crawls or stag nights, it is in fact one of the most cultural and well-behaved series of events there is. The idea behind the Krakow Nights is to enliven some of the city's most pompous and stuck-up places, like the museums or theatres, by pouring a stream of nightlife through them. And although the Krakow Museums don't change into nightclubs, it seems that seeing them at nighttime is much more popular and exciting.
Night of Museums (Noc Muzeów)
Oldest of the Krakow Nights, the Night of Museums (Noc Muzeów) first took place in 2004. It was based on a similar event organized in Berlin. On a chosen May night, museums that decide to take place in the event, open their doors to visitors outside regular visiting hours – and some even organize special exhibitions for that one night. To participate in the Night of Museums, just stand in one of the lines (much longer than usually, but it's worth the wait) and purchase a special, symbolic coin-ticket that will grant you access to virtually all the Krakow Museums on that night.
Theatre Night (Noc Teatru)
First organized in 2007, the Theatre Night repeated the success of the Night of Museums. The Theatre Night includes some of the most interesting and popular regular theatre performances of the given season, as well as special events, among which are meetings with actors and directors, street theatre performances and plays set in original spots around Krakow. What is perhaps most interesting in the Krakow Theatre Night is the possibility to go behind the scenes of the Krakow Theatres, see the dressing rooms and other hidden spots. The Night of Theatres takes place in June.
Krakow Jazz Night
For one July night in 2008, Krakow turned into New Orleans – and from then on it is to happen every year. Outdoor scenes were set up on the “Okrąglak” (the round building in the center of the Kazimierz Nowy Square) and the Plac Szczepański (near the Palace of Arts and the Bunker of Arts) – and after the concerts ended, the fun moved to some of the Krakow Clubs. The event was successful enough to turn it into an annual festival.
Cracovia Sacra Night (Noc Sakralna)
Cracovia Sacra seems an altogether different idea. Apart from a night visit in some of the Krakow Churches, the organizers opened for the general public some of the usually inaccessible monasteries and convents of Krakow and the surroundings. The first Cracovia Sacra Night took place in August 2008.
The 2009 Krakow Nights
2009 means two more Krakow Nights: one of Film and one of Science. The dates are yet unknown, but they will probably fit in some of the free Summer nights. The other Krakow Nights will probably organized on their traditional dates: The Night of Museums in May, the Theatre Night in June, the Jazz Night in July and the Cracovia Sacra Night in August. Be sure to check our site regularly for updates on the Krakow Nights.
