18.02.2010News: The Krakow Bagel to be acknowledged by the EU

Was the bagel invented in Krakow? This is a topic for debate amongst most bagel lovers although there does seem to be some consensus on the fact that the origin of the bagel was more than likely Eastern Europe and bagel legends seem to support this conclusion.

A unique tasty treat for Krakowians of all ages!

To have this local tradition recognised Poland has motioned to register their unique ring-shaped treat  “obwarzanek krakowski" as a regional product with the E.U. This has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union. If no other member state protests this, the bagel will receive a certificate of Protected Geographical Indication from the EU. The 40-page document justifiying Krakow’s claim to the bagel that was submitted to the EU describes in detail how the history of the bagel and how it is prepared.

There is historical evidence that the pastry was first documented in the late 14th century. A document has survived to this day in which “obwarzanek” pastries, then called by their Latin name circulis or circinellos, were ordered for the royal court.

In Cracow today there are a dozen or so bakers that make the “obwarzanek krakowski”. There are circular in nature, usually 11-18 cm’s in diameter and known for their delightful crust, sprinkled with either salt, poppy or sesame seeds and retail for appox. 1.20pln.

On your next trip to Krakow, don’t forget to try one of these unique snacks.
