Following an idea first developed and implemented by German officials in Thuringen, Krakow municipals have decided to sell road holes that have been displayed when the snow has melted. A road hole owner’s name will be put into asphalt in the very hole he has donated to help fix. The reason behind this unorthodox offer is simply a lack of money for current repairs, but apparently in Germany it turned out to be a jackpot. German road holes, sold for 50 euro a piece, go like hot cakes, and Krakow hopes for the same result.

According to Joanna Niedziałkowska, the head of Communal Infrastructure and Transport Department (ZIKiT) 'none of Polish cities can afford to make repairs to all of their roads, but the main cities are in a better financial situation and its the main roads that get the attention. It is the minor roads that are soon going to swarm with commemorative plaques of their buyers. At least such are city’s plans.'

Formally, buying a hole is a tax free donation, complemented with signing all necessary documents and obtaining a certificate. The minimum price is 270 PLN (ca. 70 euro), the medium holes (2 ft in lenght pproximately) are sold at 600 PLN (160 euro) and the premium ones go by 2400 PLN (630 euro). All interested buyers should turn to ZIKiT personally, by phone or by mail: www.zikit.krakow.pl
