A gateway leading from one side of the Market Square to the other through the oldest Mall of Poland - Sukiennice - has been closed for so long that even Krakowians have forgotten how good it was to use it. For several months now even souvenir sellers have been removed from their traditional booths due to the great Sukiennice renovation project, held since several tens of months, and they had to settle for working in temporary external booths outside Sukiennice.

But as it turned out, it was worth it. Renewed and better equipped stalls, repainted walls as well as replaced flooring in one half of Sukiennice hall shows what positive changes can be expected in the near future. The remaining part of the building is to be ready by September 7th.

- With the renovation of Sukiennice’s façade coming to an end, and also the upper and underground floor undergoing major reconstruction, we will soon be able to see virtually new, beautiful and completely restored Sukiennice – said Jacek Majchrowski, mayor of Krakow on the day of opening the Merchants’ Hall.

Last major reconstruction of Sukiennice was held in 2nd half of 19th century. The Merchants’ Hall was last refurbished in 1974.
