In the worst moment the level of Wisla river was 960 centimeters high. The water could hardly fit under Dębnicki bridge near Wawel castle. Hundreds of firemen and citizens fought trying to plug two leaks in flood levees: one of them broke seriously flooding several streets in eastern part of Krakow. City dog pound hosting 800 animals had to be evacuated from another endangered area, with vast majority of them being adopted on spot by spontaneous volunteers coming to help.

Water was coming down for several days last week, launching big cleaning and repairs. It is estimated that minimum 700 million zlotys (ca. 170 million euro) is needed to cover earth works at flood levees, road works and repairs of public utility buildings. It is not yet known how much average sufferer will have to spend to relieve from consequences of high water, but ca. 10 thousand of households will definitely need financial aid. According to Roman Ciepiela, the vice governor of Malopolska, 45 million zlotys of region’s last year’s surplus funds will be allocated to damage liquidation.
