90% people want a crematory in Krakow, provided it’s far away from their home

Now cremation in Krakow is a luxury
This may soon change

Krakow’s municipals have been trying to open a state of the art crematory since 14 years. However all locations are blocked by the neighbors , as nobody is inclined to suffer a crematory near their homes. The most preferable location is apparently the city’s outskirts. As for now, anybody who wishes to cremate a relative has to go several tens of kilometers west, near the city of Katowice, which raises the funeral costs by 700 zlotys (more than 150 euro).

In 2009 Zbigniew Baran, the owner of Karawan - Prosmed funeral company has applied for a permit to install crematory furnaces in Małopolska Funeral Center in Nowa Huta district. This information has electrified the councilmen of Nowa Huta.

 - We shall never agree on this location – declares Edward Porębski, head councilman.

 - The crematory still needs many permits from health and security services, not to mention community consultations – says Małgorzata Mrugała from Krakow’s Environmental Department.

 - The need for crematorium in Krakow is urgent, as this burial method is becoming more and more popular and our city is the last one not to have one – comments Wieslawa Gawlik, co-owner of Karawan-Prosmed.

This is very true, especially that there is sufficient burial space in Krakow only until 2018.
