Joseph Conrad Festival
The Six Senses – a common brand for some of the most interesting Krakow Festivals – is now full, with its last addition announced on January 15th. The last piece of the puzzle is the Joseph Conrad Festival, devoted to international literature. The Joseph Conrad Festival will take place between November 3rd and 7th.
Joseph Conrad – the famous English author of novels such as Lord Jim or the Heart of Darkness – was in fact of Polish origin. Joseph Conrad was born as Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski in 1857 in Berdyczow in today's Ukraine in the family of Apollo Korzeniowski, also a writer. Not many people know, that before starting his sailing career, he lived in Krakow between the ages of 10 and 17.
Festivals linked to literature are not uncommon to Krakow either. An annual book fair organized in the city for quite a few years now turned out to be a very popular event. In fact, the events of the Joseph Conrad Festival will partly coincide with the 13th Krakow Book Fair, which is to take place between November 5th and 8th.
The Joseph Conrad Festival will not be devoted to the famous author. As the organizers stress, they think of Joseph Conrad more as a representative and patron of international literature. Krakow is already the capital of Polish literature – and organizers seem to take this position to the European level.
The program of the consecutive days of the Joseph Conrad Festival will be announced at a rate of approximately one day at a month. As of now, all is known, apart from the first day's events, is that the main guest of the 2009 Joseph Conrad Festival is going to be Pascal Quignard, a French writer, musician and translator. Quignard received the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 2002.

Lajkonik If one doesn't wander around Nowa Huta at night, or meet a particularly dissatisfied group of Cracovia or Wisla fans, it is not likely that one will get hit with a bat or a club in Krakow. A mace – that's a different story. If you're hit – don't be mad, be grateful, as it will mean you've been blessed by the Lajkonik, one of the most distinguishable figures of the Krakow folklore – and one of the most loved ones.
