International Soup Festival in Krakow
Some years ago, archaeologists found a skeleton of a Neanderthal, who had lost all his teeth, and didn't die. As Neanderthals' main dish was Mammoth meat, it seems a miracle kept him alive. That miracle's name was... soup!
The Krakow Soup Festival (actually, the International Soup Festival in Krakow, or Międzynarodowy Festiwal Zupy) has nothing to do with that story – but it has a lot to do with good taste, free eating, and partying till the last spoonful. Additionally, the festival takes place in Krakow's hottest nightlife spot – the Plac Nowy in the Kazimierz District!
Why Soup?
Some say that soup is the world's most popular dish, but, mostly because it usually takes some time to prepare, it has been somewhat forgotten. To defend the ancient art of soup-cooking, an International Soup Festival was conceived and organized in Wezemmes in France in 2001. A year later, the International Soup Festival moved to the Krakow Kazimierz district, and stayed there for a longer time, becoming one of Cracow's most popular events, with 30 thousand people visiting it in 2007.
When is the International Soup Festival?
The exact date of the International Soup Festival is usually decided a few months before its date, to give both the connoisseurs and the participants enough time to get ready. Miedzynarodowy Festiwal Zupy traditionally takes place around May 20th, and be sure we'll keep you informed about the exact date.
What You Can Do For the Krakow International Soup Festival
One can participate in the Krakow Soup Festival in two ways. The easy way consists of coming to the Plac Nowy on the day of the festival and eating (sampling...) as much as one can (all the soup is free), while waiting for the jury of soup connoisseurs to choose the winning soup. The hard way means cooking about 10 liters of your favorite soup and bringing it to the festival – and then... waiting for the jury of soup connoisseurs to choose the winning soup. And then, if you're good (or lucky) enough, celebrating the title of the winner of the Krakow International Soup Festival and the magnificent prize of the Gold (Silver, Bronze) Patera.
It's Not All About Soup...
Apart from the obvious culinary pleasures, the Krakow Soup Festival is also a good reason to have a beer or two and just enjoy yourselves. The soup sampling is usually accompanied by various live bands playing loud and energetic music, and the celebrations of the International Soup Festival don't end until well past midnight.

Lajkonik If one doesn't wander around Nowa Huta at night, or meet a particularly dissatisfied group of Cracovia or Wisla fans, it is not likely that one will get hit with a bat or a club in Krakow. A mace – that's a different story. If you're hit – don't be mad, be grateful, as it will mean you've been blessed by the Lajkonik, one of the most distinguishable figures of the Krakow folklore – and one of the most loved ones.
