Divine Comedy Theatre Festival
For a week in December, Krakow turns from the regular, earthly city turns into heaven, hell and purgatory – all at once. And although the Krakow tourists don't need to worry – no apocalypse is expected, it might turn out that there's more reality to theatre than you could've imagined.
The reason for this supernatural mess is the Boska Komedia (Divine Comedy) theatre festival, one of the major events of the Six Senses cultural strategy. As the organizers say, the aim of the festival is to – as Dante did in the original Divine Comedy – present a landscape showing the present man's condition – all by way of theatre. “It's a spiritual feast for all those seeking concentration and intelligent entertainment” - they add.
The “intelligent entertainment” is provided by world's leading theatrical groups, with the list of guests of the 2008 Divine Comedy Festival including performers from the RSA, Columbia, Iran or India among others. Those are accompanied by the best 8 Polish plays of the past season, one of which will receive the title of the “Divine Comedian”, and a nice heap of cash to go with it.
The performances will be held in virtually all the Krakow Theatres, including the Old Theatre on Jagiellonska Street and the magnificent Juliusz Slowacki Theatre, as well as some smaller ones.
The theatrical events will be accompanied by a theoretical insight by one of the most interesting contemporary French philosophers, the 1946-born Jean-Luc Marion – a student of Jacques Derrida and Louis Althusser, inspired equally by his masters and the great figures of phenomenology – Husserl, Heidegger and Levinas. Marion will give a seminar on December 5th, concerning the relation of God and metaphysics – a truly marvelous topic for a festival entitled Divine Comedy.
The Divine Comedy Festival 2009 will probably take place in December in various spots around Krakow, as did the 2008 edition. Tickets for the events of the Boska Komedia can be bought in the Krakow Theatres. As for the exact program of the Boska Komedia Theatre Festival, best see the organizer's web site at www.boskakomedia.pl .

Lajkonik If one doesn't wander around Nowa Huta at night, or meet a particularly dissatisfied group of Cracovia or Wisla fans, it is not likely that one will get hit with a bat or a club in Krakow. A mace – that's a different story. If you're hit – don't be mad, be grateful, as it will mean you've been blessed by the Lajkonik, one of the most distinguishable figures of the Krakow folklore – and one of the most loved ones.
