Art Boom Festival
When it comes to festivals, Krakow seems to have it all. Cracow has film festivals, like the Etiuda & Anima and the Krakow Film Festival. Krakow has classical music festivals, like the Festival of Polish Music, as well as pop music events – such as the Coke Live Festival. It also has theatre festivals – like the Boska Komedia – festivals related to sightseeing (Krakow Nights) and photography (Photomonth). That's not all – Cracow also has festivals that combine some of these fields, like the Sacrum Profanum, combining classical and popular music, the Film Music Festival, mixing film and music, or the Music in Old Krakow, putting together music and sightseeing. And on a more extraordinary side, Krakow organizes festivals devoted to Pierogi and Soup. Can the city take more?
Some think it can – and that it needs at least one more: a festival devoted to visual art. The festival is to be called Art Boom and will be organized in June, 2009.
As befits a new festival, the Art Boom will focus on what's most recent in art. Its aim is to confront the most interesting Polish artists with what's going on abroad, and by that become an important place on Europe's art festival map.
An important part of the Art Boom Festival will be creation, for the visiting artists are to be encouraged to exercise their talents during the event. The works created during the Art Boom Festival will be kept in Krakow – and used as exhibits in the Museum of Modern Art Cracow plans to start building... some day.
Each edition of the Art Boom Festival will be devoted to a certain topic. The first one will be Krakow, viewed as an inspiring, modern yet traditional city. The artists are not only to be passively inspired, but also actively conquer stereotypes about the city.
The exact date of the first Art Boom Festival in Krakow is not yet known – but it is planned to happen in the second half of June.

Lajkonik If one doesn't wander around Nowa Huta at night, or meet a particularly dissatisfied group of Cracovia or Wisla fans, it is not likely that one will get hit with a bat or a club in Krakow. A mace – that's a different story. If you're hit – don't be mad, be grateful, as it will mean you've been blessed by the Lajkonik, one of the most distinguishable figures of the Krakow folklore – and one of the most loved ones.
